What this covers
- What Forward Deployed Engineers actually do at Palantir, Ramp, Scale, OpenAI, Anthropic
- The 6 traits FDEs share — customer-facing comfort, full-stack range, product judgment, written async, debugging-in-the-dark, ship-now bias
- The honest self-test: 8 questions you must answer yes to before positioning as one
- Adjacent archetypes if FDE isn't you: solutions eng, applied AI, product eng, dev-rel-eng
Why this matters for Indian devs going remote
"FDE" is the highest-leverage positioning for a generalist Indian dev — it bypasses the "what's your specialty" filter and frames range as the value, not a weakness. But it's not a costume — if you don't have the customer-facing instinct, claiming FDE on your LinkedIn will get exposed in 10 minutes of interview. Picking the right archetype is downstream of knowing yourself.
Outline
What FDEs actually do
TODO — week-in-the-life at 3 different companies (Palantir vs Ramp vs OpenAI); the common shape.
The 6 traits
TODO — customer-facing comfort, full-stack range, product judgment, written async, debugging-in-the-dark, ship-now bias. What each looks like in practice.
The 8-question self-test
TODO — the questions, the threshold; what a "soft yes" really means.
Adjacent archetypes
TODO — solutions eng, applied AI, product eng, dev-rel-eng — pick the closest fit if FDE is a stretch.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Claiming FDE because the role looks senior, without the customer-facing instinct
- Conflating "full-stack engineer" with "FDE" — they're not the same
- Skipping the self-test because you want the positioning
Templates / examples
