How to find OSS repos whose maintainers convert contributors into hires — the GitHub signals (Series A-C, India-friendly team page, contributor-to-employee history) and the search queries that surface them.

What this covers
- The 5 GitHub signals that mean "this team converts OSS contributors to hires"
- The funding-stage heuristic (Series A-C product OSS) and why FAANG OSS is the wrong target
- How to verify a company hires from India before investing 20 hours on a PR
- The search queries (GitHub topic, YC list, OpenSauced) that produce the long list
Why this matters for Indian devs going remote
Most OSS contributors burn hours on repos where the maintainers can't hire them — Linux kernel, Apache projects, FAANG-internal OSS. The contribute-to-hire game requires picking repos where the maintainer is also the hiring manager and where remote-from-India is on the table. Finding that overlap is half the work.
Outline
The 5 hiring-signal indicators
TODO — visible team page with Indian devs, recent contributor → employee promotions, "remote" in JDs, Slack/Discord with maintainer presence, Series A-C funding.
The funding-stage heuristic
TODO — pre-seed (no budget), Series A-C (hiring fast, OSS-as-funnel), late-stage / public (bureaucratic) — why the middle is the sweet spot.
Verifying India eligibility
TODO — JD language to grep for ("anywhere in the world", "global remote"), country-of-residence filters, gotchas with PEO vs contractor.
The search queries
TODO — GitHub topic search, YC OSS list, OpenSauced trends, dev tool indexes — actual query strings.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Targeting Apache/CNCF projects expecting to get hired (you won't — different game)
- Picking a repo without checking the funding stage
- Skipping the team-page check and contributing to a 2-person team that can't hire
Templates / examples
TODO — a target-repo tracker (Notion template), 10 example repos that meet all 5 criteria, and the YC OSS shortlist as of 2026.
